Verdant vegetables are supplements thick sources. They have cancer prevention agent movement and in this way can possibly be utilized as modest regular hotspots for diminishing cell oxidative harm and lessen degenerative conditions, for example, cardiovascular infections and malignancies. The utilization of a few verdant vegetable are urged enough to satisfy supplement particularly in creating nations (Uusiku et al., 2010). Shading turns into a proportion of value and furthermore a sign of decay. In excess of 700 normally happening carotenoids have been recognized (Britton et al., 2004). Carotenoids are generally dispersed though C40 isoprenoid shades with polyene affixes contain up to 15 conjugated twofold bonds. They outfit blossoms and natural products with unmistakable hues (e.g., yellow, orange, and red), which can pull in pollinators Moreover carotenoids assume significant jobs in photosynthesis, light reaping, and anticipation of photooxidative harm (Britton et al., 2004). Carotenoids can be delegated carotenes (sans oxygen; e.g ÃŽ ²-carotene) and xanthophylls (oxygen-containing; for example lutein, zeaxanthin, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, and antheraxanthin (Fig. 2). Fig. 2. Synthetic structures of chosen carotenoids The polyene chain of carotenoids is answerable for the shade of plants and organic products. The length of the chromophore impacts the shading, for instance from the dismal phytoene, through the orange shade of ÃŽ ²-carotene to the red of capsaxanthin (because of the expanding number of twofold bonds). Other than the shading, the polyene chain is liable for the flimsiness against a few ecological components for example oxidation, warmth and light or oxidizing substance (Britton et al., 2004). Carotenoid shades are gathering of bioactive exacerbates that are important to the food researchers, nutritionists and food ventures because of their positive effect on human wellbeing and their financial advantages. Carotenoids are liable for the alluring shade of most foods grown from the ground, having various organic capacities and exercises. A broad number of fa

What the end of the semester does to Conner 2

What the end of the semester does to Conner 2 Hello readers. Happy Holidays to everyone! The term is over and Im happy to be getting lots and lots of sleep in my FULL SIZE (!) bed at home. Almost all of my grades are in and Im also happy to report that I did much better this semester than last (*grin*), so thats a nice feeling. All thats left from last semester is a bunch of pictures that Im about to share. I walked out of my room one day to discover a huge mess. Well, it may have taken a while for the mess to present itself (perspective and all that). But it had finally reached the point where it was worth documenting, so I took a bunch of pictures. And now Im able to show you just what finals week did to the 213 suite. First of all, everyone is always eating and never doing dishes, so the sink looks like that. Second of all, peopleapparently dont have big enough desks, so they spread their study materials all over the counters, like so. Also, since our walls are not made of dry-erase boards, they improvise. This is the wall of 5.12 (organic chemistry) study material, I believe. (Im not a chem person, dont ask me.) And we clearly dont have enough counter space But who wants to talk about how crazy everyone was studying for finals? Theyre over! Lets talk about the good stuff. Right between the end of classes and finals week (known as reading period, which is when were given a couple of days off to study, which we really spend shopping and catching up on sleep, which are both valid uses of our newfound free time, in my humble opinion), is the annual Conner 2 non-denominational politically correct winter festivities dinner, which is so named really just for the fun of it, since it comes complete with its very own Secret Santa tradition that no one ever complains is politically incorrect. Go figure. Please enjoy the following pictures of Conner 2 residents (in varying states of formal attire) enjoying the non-denominational festivities: Chris (our GRT) and David. Rick and Zach. A week before this picture was taken, some people were handing stuff out in front of Building 7 (the main entrance to main campus). This isnt really unusual, and it comes with varying degrees of annoyance. Protesters and activists hand out pamphlets and chant slogans, and sometimes I find myself able to forgive them for what I think are ridiculous opinions based on the cleverness of their slogans. Anyway, on this particular day I was handed one sticker, no strings attached (not even a website to visit, the one time I actually wanted more information) by a guy who explained that they were trying to get people to think about and get involved in public issues. The sticker said My government is a                  , which totally cracked me up. I really thought this was hilarious. Rick was also handed one of these, which he saved in case he ever needed it. Well, he scratched out the a, filled in the blank, and gave it to Adelaide as part of her Secret Santa gift. Anyway, all of that is a really long way of getting to the point, which is that Adelaide is wearing a sticker that says My government is Stephen Harper, because Adelaide is our resident Canadian. Ha. Mason is clearly the only one who has any idea Im taking this picture. Rick is wearing a cheese head, because hes from Wisconsin. I guess. I dont know, I just post pictures on the Internet, ok? Apparently Conner 2 is really into making its residents into caricatures based on their home towns/cities/nations. (Diana and are the resident New Jerseyans and often get asked such things as So when you go home for semester breaks, is it really like that movie Garden State?) I was debating if I wanted to get dressed up or not, and finally gave in to the temptation because Javier wanted to know what I actually looked like when I was dressed up. Adelaide took this picture, and I kind of think she should title it Girl with Fork because that would be both accurate and artistic, and how often do those two coincide? Seriously. Conner 2 has an additional tradition related to our Secret Santa exchange- instead of just writing the recipients name on the gift (how boring would that be!) we instead attach a poem about them. The fun starts when one person who is elected to begin the exchange picks a gift at random, reads the poem, and then everyone else figures out who the poem refers to. As you can imagine, these poems can getcreative? Amusing? Inappropriate for reposting on the Internet? All of the above? ;-) As for the poems, limericks are a popular choice, although this year even included a real-life honest-to-goodness sonnet. No joke. We take our Secret Santa seriously here on Conner 2. For example, Ricks gift was actually 5 or 6 separate items, separately wrapped. After the barbecue chips and wooden dowel, we were all really, really confused, until he finally unwrapped the stuffed penguin. Apparently theres some inside joke that I totally missed (which sadly ruined my full enjoyment of this moment of unveiling) about Rick wanting to know if rotisserie penguin are kosher. Dont ask me, I wasnt there, and I mean it when I say I really have no idea. In another example of Secret Santa hardcoreness, my gift was wrapped in duct tape (to which someone joked how are you going to open it??), a reference to my duct tape fashion constructions for the Anything But Clothes Party. (Seriously, once you post pictures of yourself wearing nothing but duct tape on the Internet, you can NEVER GO BACK. Just remember that. Forget everything I ever told you about college apps- thats my biggest piece of advice). My poem even started In case the packaging didnt give it away Thanks to Adelaide for some of the pictures! Happy Holidays, everyone! What are you guys doing for New Years? (No pressure, Im probably going to invite a friend to sleep over and stay up all night with my sister watching Season 2 of Veronica Mars on DVD, which I just got for Christmas.) Responses to Comments: Anonymous asked: What classes do freshmen take? Although there is a certain amount of freedom, freshmen usually try to knock off as many of the GIRs as they can. (GIRs are General Institute Requirements, which are core classes that everyone needs to graduate.) Its possible to branch out and start with some other subjects, but that can be hard to do first semester since even a lot of the introductory classes within the majors have GIR pre-requisites. The basic track goes like this: Fall semester: 18.01 (Calculus) 8.01 (Mechanics) 3.091 or 5.111 or 5.112 (different flavors of intro chemistry) ??.??? Humanities class of your choice- its best to pick one that has a HASS-D (distribution requirement) and/or CI-H (communications intensive) label, since these are part of the needlessly complex (in my opinion) Humanities requirement Spring semester: 18.02 (Multi-variable calculus) 8.02 (Electricity and Magnetism) 7.013 or 7.014 (different flavors of intro bio- another flavor offered in the fall as 7.012) ??.??? Another humanites class of your choice- again, HASS-Ds and CI-Hs are useful, but by this point youll have a better grasp of the requirements, which will make it easier to know what you should take Depending on what classes you pass out of with AP credit or advanced standing exams, this schedule can look a lot different. This is just one option for a student that didnt test out of anything. If you get credit for 18.01, you could obviously start at 18.02 in the fall. Or you could take chemistry and bio in the fall and wait until the spring for 18.02. Orwell, you get the idea, there are lots of combinations available. The vast majority of freshmen take some calculus, some physics, and some chemistry first semester. And not that many take biology- its an intro class, but since most majors dont require it as a prereq, its certainly not uncommon to see seniors in 7.012, scrambling to fulfill the requirement for graduation. =) Another common freshmen class is 18.03 (differential equations). 18.03 is not a GIR, strictly speaking, but it can satisfy one of the REST elective requirements (restricted electives in science and technologyeven though its a math classgo figure) and its required for some of the more common majors (Courses 2 and 6- mechanical engineering and EECS, respectively- spring to mind). Also, a good portion of freshmen who test out of the intro classes (common ones to skip are 18.01, 18.02, and 8.01) will take an intro class in their major during the spring semester- like 2.001, 6.001, etc. While this can be a great way to get your feet wet in a subject youre not sure you want to major in, its important to remember that its not remotely necessary- if you come into MIT with no AP/transfer/advanced standing credit whatsoever, you can still graduate on time, take a bunch of cool classes, and be sure you wont be made fun of or anything. By sophomore year, most students will be in a similar place and no one will know/remember/care if you tested out of 18.01 or not. Post Tagged #Burton-Conner House

To What Extent Has the Importance of Martin Luther King...

How far has the importance of Martin Luther King been exaggerated? The significance of Martin Luther King’s role during the Civil Rights Movement in the USA has become a matter for debate. In this essay I will examine the importance of his role along with many other factors. Shortly after King graduated with a Doctorates in Theology at the University of Boston, he was instantly involved in the attempts to improve black peoples rights in predominantly the South of America. King was the harbinger of Civil rights and ‘hit the ground running’ with his policies and ways of protests. His non violent strategies - inspired by Ghandi - were the source of his actions and they proved to be very popular. One of his most notable successes was the†¦show more content†¦A further legislation put in to place was in 1957. The Civil Rights Act addressed the situation of voting rights, where only 20% of Black Americans had passed the test in order to vote. Congress passed the act to ensure all Americans could vote and forbade any person from interfering with anyones right to vote, in actuality little was done to enforce the Act, and the situation remained. Though, 3 years later, the Act was amended by requiring local authorities to keep thorough voting records. However, records showed that the acts only increased the number of votes by a dreary 3%. Another legislation put forward was in 1960 when Kennedy won the election, he put forward a controversial notion of a Civil Rights Act; he had showed support in previous years when he supported the Freedom Riders in 1961. But President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 so he could not pass the Act until his successor; Vice President Lyndon Johnson approved the Bill in July next year. The Act marked a defining moment in the struggle for Civil Rights; it outlawed segregation in all areas. In Source A we can see the combined partnership of Johnson and Kennedy, they offered a mixed bag of experience and charisma, which gave a great deal of diversity to American politics, who in the past rarely did anything to do with Civil rights; their policies gained millions of votes from anti-discriminates. Minsk Towns are like people Free Essays

Towns are like people. Some are rich and influential from their conception; others need to acquire such qualities over centuries. Minsk is an example of the latter though founded as a border fortification in the Polatsk Principality, over its millennial history Minsk has managed to be the predominant centre of power in an appanage, capital of a province and at long last the capital of an independent nation counting 10 million people. We will write a custom essay sample on Minsk: Towns are like people or any similar topic only for you Order Now Well, as Minsk is more that 900 years, it is quite enough to speak about its antiquity. But unfortunately almost all traces of old times are lost. There are practically no ancient buildings in Minsk, but the hero-city tries to keep memory about its past. And nowadays numerous names of the streets and squares, churches remind us not about the stormy past of Minsk, but of our country. And the first place that is worth visiting is the Red Church (the church of St. Simeon and Helen). It was built in the early 20th c. under the sponsorship of the Vaynilovich family (a Slutsk judge, landowner Vaynilovich and his wife Olyrnia) who donated all their money to commemorate their children Simon and Helen who died unexpectedly of an unknown disease. Their names are given to 2 small towers, white the big one as the symbol of eternally mourning parents. The church is mainly decorated in Roman style with its majestic forms, balance, quiet strength though some details of Gothic style could also be seen. The sculptural composition of Archangel Michael who kills a winged dragon symbolizes the victory of the divine army over the forces of darkness. Nowadays, the red church building, which has already served as Belarusian SSR’s National Polisk Theatre, a film studio and a cinema, has since 1990 been returned to believers, but it serves not only a religious purpose. Concerts of organ music, religious music concerts of world-famous composers are held here, one-actor theatre performances are staged and sketches are played. The Church of the Holy Trinity and St Roch on Golden Hill is another attraction. Golden Hill is the old name for this region of the town. Maybe for the wonderful golden decoration of trees, maybe for that as the legend says â€Å"the citizens collected the golden coins for the church building, this region was called Golden Hill. The church was dedicated to St. Roch, who was noted pilgrim a healer, invoked for his miraculous powers against the plague and cholera. The church is a monument f neogothic architecture. The interior of the church was of timber painted to resemble marble. On the High Altar stood a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child and a represent of the Holy Trinity. The church was restored in 1983 and given over to the nearly State Philharmonic as a small concert chamber on account of its excellent acoustics. You can’t but visit St Alexander Nevski Ghurch which was built in memory of Belarusian soldiers who perished in the Russian-Turkish conflict of 1877-78 and carries a miraculous story. In June 1941 a bomb managed to pierce the church dome and fall in front of the altar without exploding. Later it was one of only two active churches in Minsk. Both of the nations celebrated poets Y. Kupala and Y. Kolas, as well as various masters of art, culture and science in Belarus, are buried in the Military cemetery alongside the soldiers who laid their lives to free Minsk from the Fascists. Even the name of the next place to see reflects the historic past of the country. That is Victory Square. The obelisk of Victory commemorates the deaths of soldiers, partisans, and all the inhabitants of Belarus killed in the struggle with fascism during WWII. Its height is 38 m. It is covered by grey granite. It is topped by the Order of Victory which is decorated by multi-coloured smelt. The Eternal Flame was inflamed on the 3 d of July in 1961 and bright scarlet flowers seem to bum together with the flame till late autumn. Well, I suppose that nobody can resist the temptation of visiting one of the chief glories of Minsk – Trinity Suburb. It is a tangle of narrow streets lined with a fascinating array of little craft and curio shops. Delightful small houses seem to whisper their secrets to each other across the cobbled way. Here you have a feeling of coming back into the 18th c. Suburb is renowned for its historic buildings. You can enjoy the view of the Holy Spirit Cathedral and the church of St. Paul and Peter also can be seen here. Not far from these sacred places, on a bend in the river Svisloch there is a humpback bridge leading to the Isle of Tears, the monument to the sons of Fatherland who died beyond its borders. The monument is designed in the shape of a temple. It stands on 16 piles which go deep into swampy soil. In the centre of the monument there are figures of mourning mothers, who personify Belarusian women crying over their dead sons. Some of them hold icons in their hands, others – portraits of their sons. Mothers, standing at the front, hold lamps which symbolize the warmth of home health. Inside there are altars with the inscribed names of 771 dead soldiers. In the middle of the monuments there is the sacred Place where the Bells of Memory are ringing. Weeping willows bend over the water. So you see, there are a lot of sights in Minsk that are connected with the history of Belarus. Their beauty and their historical heritage attract thousands of tourists from all over the world and make Minsk and amazing place, which is really worth seeing. Frankenstein And Critique Of Education Essay Example For Students

Frankenstein And Critique Of Education Essay Mary Shellys Frankenstein focuses on human nature and on the possibility ofcontrolling experience in order to shape character and cultural values. Specifically, it focuses on the influence of education and experience ineffecting behavior. In general, the characters are divided in to three groups byeducation and experience: passive rescued women, ambitious bourgeoisie men, andthe self-taught lonesome creature. Through the female character group, MaryShelly illustrates how the combination of education and experience shapeattitudes and behaviors of women to be passive objects, which leads to theirdemise. Mary Shelly spends the least time describing the education of women, repeating one version of female upbringing. The lack of time devoted to femalecharacters in general is not a blatant disregard of women; rather, it istestimony to the limited role women exercised in public sphere of society. Caroline Beaufort is the model of virtuous femininity rescued from poverty tobourgeois passivity. Caroline, the daughter of a proud, failed businessman, follows her father into self-imposed exile to avoid the humiliation of failurewhere he falls into a terrible sickness of humiliation. Completely dedicated toher father, Caroline attended him with the greatest tenderness; but she sawwith despair that their little fund was rapidly decreasing (Shelly 32)Luckily Caroline possessed a mind of uncommon mould; and her courage rose tosupport her in her adversity and by various means contrived to earn apittance scarcely sufficient to support life (Shelly 32). She not only caresfor him during his pathetic free fall from life, but she also actively procuredwork and single-handedly supported herself and her father. It is obvious thathas Caroline possesses the skills and tenacity to support not only herself, buther father as well. However, when her fathers falls victim to death sheimmediately trans forms from a caring, productive women to an orphan andbeggar (Shelly 32). There is nothing to note any changes in the attitude oractions of Caroline to warrant such a change. Rather, the change is a directresult of the death of her father. Despite the fact that Caroline possessed theability to provide for herself, her description and social status remained tiedto her father. Even though women had the ability to act as free agents insociety, their description, status was invariably tied to a male. Luckily, forCaroline, an associate of her fathers rescued her from her sudden sociallyimposed poverty. While mourning her fathers death, Alphonse Frankensteincame like a protecting spirit to the poor girl, who committed herself to hiscare (Shelly 32). Caroline translates her gratitude of being saved from atough mans world into lifelong subservience. She immediately transfers herselfless dedication from one man, her father, to another, her new husbandAlpohnse Frankenstein demonstrating the f emales artificial dependence on men. Saved to the feminine life of passive servitude, Caroline similarly rescuesother girls from poverty and educates them in the virtues of bourgeoisdomesticity. Thus, she finds Elizabeth, whose seemingly innate, upper classfeminine virtue makes her shine amid a family of dark-eyed, hardy littlevagrants (Shelly 34). Upon being rescued, Caroline presented Elizabeth toVictor as her promised gift (Shelly 34). Immediately following herintroduction to bourgeois life, Elizabeth is transformed to possession of amale. Once in the Frankenstein household, Elizabeth learned to be the livingspirit of love to soften and attract (Shelly 38). Once under proper middleclass guidance, Elizabeth becomes the ideal female by providing comfort andsupport while becoming dependent on male energy and male provision. Thus, likeher foster mother, she is the perfect domestic woman: daughter, sister, friend, and wife-to-be. Justine Moritz, a poor girl is also saved from her tyrant, exploitive mother by Caroline. Once introduced to the bourgeois Frankensteinfamily Justine trained to be a servant. Just like Caroline and Elizabeth beforeher, Justine quickly learns the female role of serving others. Undoubtedlythankful for Caroline saving her from her tyrannical mother, Justine idealizedher and considered her to be the model of all excellence, and endeavored toimitate her phraseology and manners (Shelly 65). Evidently, Justine attemptedto emulate Carolines middle class virtues making her equally passive andobedient. Justine, along with Caroline and Elizabeth, are manifestations of howwomen fulfill and are fulfilled by their servitude dominated domestic lives. .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d , .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .postImageUrl , .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d , .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:hover , .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:visited , .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:active { border:0!important; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:active , .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uacfffd1920f0b793ece1d5b27f4c348d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Folk vs rock EssayWomen once guided into what Mary Shellys mother Mary Wollstonecraft describesas gentleness, docility, and a spaniel-like affection, are less agentsthen they are objects acted upon (6) . Analisis of Te Flannery OConnorS Text a Good Man Is Hard to Find” free essay sample

Analisis of te Flannery O? Connor? s text: A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND† As the title says: a good man is hard to find. But it? s not easy to find a good woman either, even if she is an old and cristian lady. Perhaps the author chose this protagonist on purpose to show that the lack of humanity is found anywhere or anyone. In the beggining of the text, when the grandmother hear about the scaped prisioner she says: I wouldn? t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that allose in it. I couldn? t answer to my concience if I did. (page 166, line 11) Ironicaly, that was exactly what she did. Even worse, she took whole family to die. But she had to answer to her concience what she did, not only these time, but along her whole life. That? s also ironic that she had taken the cat with her, afraid of something bad would happens to it, but it? s the only one in the family that, apparently, stay alive. We will write a custom essay sample on Analisis of Te Flannery O?Connor?S Text: a Good Man Is Hard to Find† or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Since â€Å" we cannot face a short story as if it were a mathematical problem with one single result†(Bonnici, p. 140), we? ll analise each element of narrative and try to reach some possible interpretations. Theme Behind the label of being A Good Man, the grandmother hides many of the possible themes for the text in question. Perhaps selfishness, manipulation, poor judjement and blind fate are some of them. She calls Red Sammy a good man when in fact he was naive. She also call The Misfit good man with the aim of manipulate his intelligence using the power that language can offer with it? s multiples possibilities of influence and persuading: she tried to make him to consider that as a good man he would not kill an old christian lady. But she didn? t reach the inconcient of a serial killer. What she done was find herself and her owm bad concience. Narrator In the text A Good Man is Hard to Find we have an heterodiegetic narrator, which does not participates of the story. The most part of time it? s on a objective external focus, but sometimes the narrator knows about the characters thougths, as in: In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know that she was a lady (p. 168, line 4). In this case, the omniscience is parcial. Time Chronologically, all the story happens relactively fast: less than two days. The narrative starts in Bailey? house with a dialogue among the characters – perhaps by the evening. The next morning they left home on vacation and, just some ours after the protagonist, the last character to die, was already in the ground, with three bullets passed through her chest. Psicologically, from the moment The Misfit arrived at the accident scene ahead, time is differentily perceived by the victms. From Bailey? s mother perspec tive, for example, the time she passed with the man who was about to kill her seemed to be extremely extended. There was a pistol shot from the woods, followed closely by another. Then silence. The old ladys head jerked around. She could hear the wind move through the tree tops like a long satisfied insuck of breath. Bailey Boy! she called. (p. 181, line 3) Characters We have Bailey? s mother and The Misfit as main characters. The first appears as protagonist and somewhat as focalizer. She is also manipulative, preconceituous and selfish. Maybe her family would not die if she hadn? t manipuleted the children to persuade Bailey on doing her wishes. Her desire to see a house from her childhood results in family death. However, the fact of recognizing the killer had not much influence on it. That? s becouse the bad men didn? t worried to hide their guns when they exited the car. She can be described as a caricature character. The Misfit, kind of serial killer, revolted with the injust treatment he had in jail, didn? t alter his viewpoint. It? s clear in his speech the kind of man he is. In fact, the only character who has the viewpoints changed is the old lady: at the end of narration she appears like a different person she was in the beggining. She perhaps realizes that she has not led a good life. When she sees the killer wearing her son? shirt, and considering the enormous possibility of dying without repentance, she has an epiphanie and, in a last act of charity, touchs him with a smile in her face: the same smile in the description, when: Bobby Lee returned from the woods and stood over the ditch, looking down at the grandmother who half sat and half lay in a puddle of blody with her legs crossed under her like a child? s and her face smiling up at the cloudless sky (page 185, line 1. emphasis mine). How the Civil War change the lives of the people in the US essays

How the Civil War change the lives of the people in the US essays Many peoples lives were greatly affected after the civil war. Some of the changes were good and some were bad. The civil war era is one of the most serious and interesting war in our nations history. These two different events that changed many lives of the people in the United States are slavery and African American art. The Civil War changed the lives of the family and friends of the soldiers. When slavery began, it was not the cause of racism but was the method for land owners to obtain free labor. It wasnt until the late 1800s to early 1900s that racism entered the picture. Near the end of the civil war in November 1862, 12,000 union troops landed on Hilton Head Island. The Union forces continued toward Beaufort, to take control of the nearby Islands where more than 10,000 slaves were kept. As the plantation owners fled the area, the slaves were privately free. On January 1, 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared to free all slaves living in the country. This Emancipation Proclamation only freed a few people but it did show the Americans the civil war was now being fought to end slavery. Another event that was changed after the civil war was African-American art. Being a visual artist required talent, but, for the African-American artists, it was not enough. The race were determined if they could be trained. These African-American artists were excluded from the academies, associations, and teaching institution available to white artists. After the civil war, a host of African-American visual arts started to be recognized. They still had a hard time, but it kept improving in time. They had to compete with other African-American artists for recognition and earnings for their pieces of art. The main people thats lives were changed were the family and friends of the soldiers. The soldiers would have to leave their family for battles. The families never knew when or i...

Supply chain modelling Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Supply chain modelling - Essay Example Supply chain business process integration is more or less related to collaborative ventures that businesses engage themselves in when dealing with buyers, suppliers, joint products development, common systems and shared information (Net Coach, 2012). Indeed, modern reviewers actually argue that the success behind the implementation of any supply chain management is focused on the integration of these processes and that supply chain management cannot be successful without effective supply chain business process integration. Once such integration is undertaken, the benefits and advantages that come the way of businesses is that business operation and management becomes well coordinated and harnessed (quote). The case study used is indeed part of an extended supply chain system as the company involved, Argos was faced with the need to dealing with sustainable growth in sales, quantitative number of sales channels, as well as the growth in choice for the customer (Vanderland Industries, 2009 p. 1). Indeed, supply chain system accounts greatly in the determination of reaching the customer with the demands he makes and thus the desired sustainable growth in sales and number of sales channels. The company was also faced with the challenge of increasing competitiveness on the market because from the strategic focus of the company, an ability to increase the number of sales channels and subsequently increase the number of sales would be a strong indication of the competitiveness of the company on the market. If for nothing at all, increase in sales would represent an increase market share (quote). To overcome the identified challenge, a solution rooted in the principles of supply chain system and supply chain business process integration was instituted. The major deliverable involved in the solution was to have an automated

Knowledge Is the True Organ of Sight, not the Eyes Essay

Knowledge Is the True Organ of Sight, not the Eyes - Essay Example Quoting Plato’s cave example, Falzon (2002) explains that like Plato’s compelling image of the cave, normal human beings tend to imagine things or believe in things that might merely be shadows or mere appearance, and that real-world could be something very different. Knowledge gained through senses creates images that humans tend to imagine again and again, which might not correlate with reality most of the times. Therefore, knowledge gained through senses might not be appropriate in all situations. Instead, knowledge gained through understanding and rationality helps in misinterpreting the information that senses perceive. It is interesting to note that what we see produces limited knowledge as the information involved is limited; but, what we observe imbibes greater knowledge and information. For example, Placher (1983; p.154) quotes the example of Aquinas's argument that explained how human beings see the changes in the world; but they realize that the changes happe ning in any object is because of changes happening elsewhere. The ability to see the changes happening elsewhere is observation. This observation is important for gaining an understanding of what is happening and its source as well as its outcome. In this manner, distinct events can be related and thus an understanding can be gained, which ultimately leads to improved knowledge.

Business Plan for Startup SME Company

Business Plan for Startup SME Company Business Plan for QW Consultancy Situation Analysis SME and Start Up Companies Operating from Cambridge UK and  Relational Competitor Analysis between QW Consultancy and Potential Competitors in Cambridge The situation analysis will primarily address the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats this new company could face in the transition from a theoretical construct to being a viable operative capable of mounting credible competition with other companies willing to offer similar consultancy services, or similar services within the generic and holistic framework of complete corporate consultancy services. The focus will be a relational comparison between Cambridge, UK, where the new company will be based and the rest of the UK, the EU and the international community. This analysis will be devoted to the analysis of these strengths, weaknesses; opportunities and threats (the classic SWOT analysis formulation) specifically within this geographical context. In a lot of ways the vulnerability of SMEs and Start-Up companies is a major strength and opportunity for QW, as the service that QW wish to provide will specifically target small businesses in order to give them consultancy advice in relation to the issues which will be relevant in terms of initial start up processes. Therefore a more complete understanding of the business, economic and social environment that small businesses typically operate in, in regional towns like Cambridge is paramount in building the business acumen necessary to mount and sustain an effective business operation. As Reid (1995) explains: ‘The typical firm†¦.is surrounded by some rivals with regional markets (25 per cent) and others with no more than local markets (20 per cent). A few (2 per cent) operate internationally. The typical firm†¦.can readily distinguish major from minor competitors and has about three of each. Its principal product is a mildly differentiated commodity which it would characterize as ‘similar’ to that of its rivals. Its customers vary in the extent to which they are well-informed. The typical customer is well-informed, and has a least some familiarity with the technical features of the products, and some experience, directly or indirectly, of consuming them†¦.[1]’. It is clear therefore, that QW will rely heavily upon the local economy in Cambridge, a relatively moderately populated location (the population of Cambridge as counted in the last census is represented in diagrammatic form[2] in the schedule attached[3]). Accordingly the success of QW is likely to mainly be contingent upon local factors, which in turn will be heavily affected by local competitors. Also, particularly in light of Reid’s analysis above, QW needs to understand that although it is a novel concept for a consultancy firm to provide consultancy services specifically to the small business sector, and although, according to the business plan it is anticipated that this will fill a gap in the market, QW must not over estimate the uniqueness of their idea. Their idea essentially involves a singular focus on the SME and start-up business sectors in terms of delivering consultancy services. However, if one examines Diagram One ((which gives a breakdown of the main companie s that offers similar consultancy services in Cambridge, UK, and therefore represents the potential main competitors which QW would encounter if they set up in Cambridge, UK) and which the writer has attached in the Diagrams Section, at the end of this document), it is integral to note that a significant percentage of the largest companies offering consultancy services in Cambridge target the same publics that QW propose to i.e. the start-up business sector and the SME sector. Also, it is important for QW to be aware that these competitors, (while they have got a range of services, only one element of which is usually targeted at the start-up and SME sector), still represent a major threat to the economic success of QW. Indeed, this situation will be a major threat to (and weakness of) QW along with the usual threats faced by fledgling companies. Anderson et al. (1993) give us an insight into these more generic threats: ‘Typically†¦business is forced to operate in market niches. These niches are often market segments which are relatively small in size and may be lacking in adequate growth or profitability opportunities, unless skilfully exploited. Limited physical, financial and human resources, a lack of industrial experience and of business acumen on the part of owner-managers†¦.are frequently to blame for poor exploitation of these fragile niches. Nevertheless, if a†¦(business)†¦.is to grow and prosper, rather than simply to survive, over a non-trivial period of time (say more than three years), it must properly identify, develop and implement the requisite business strategy†¦[4]’. Therefore specifically in terms of Cambridge, UK, QW should consider setting up a presence alongside their competitors, with a strong focus on what makes their service unique (including exclusive pricing policies). As these SME and start up company specific services, and similar ones are offered by their main competitors such as Ernst and Young, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Oakland, and because consultancy itself is such a fluid concept which is often misinterpreted or misunderstood by the end user of the service, QW need to keep two things in mind. Firstly, their planned marketing efforts should be targeted to establish their presence alongside that of their competitors, which will help to differentiate the service QW have to offer. Therefore, QW may wish to consider advertising in the Yellow Pages. Secondly, QW should consider using the voluntary and government sponsored sector within Cambridge to assist them to advertise their service. Therefore, they should potentially consider doing leaflet drops with agencies such as the East of England Regional Development Centre which is responsible for offering assistance to SMEs and Start-Up companies in Cambridge. Also, a similar initiative could be targeted at the St Johns Innovation Centre, in Cambridge which has a similar function. In this way, QW may be able to take advantage of inexpensive advertising for their new company and they will get a high level of exposure to desired publics. QW may also wish to set up a website, as many of their competitors listed in Diagram One have. Also, in terms of safeguarding the unique idea that their proposed company is based upon, QW may wish to consider registering this in order to secure intellectual property rights in their concept, as is their right in light of the developments the law has made in terms of offering intellectual property security. Pietrobelli, C. and Sverrisson, A. (2003) have pointed to the importance of taking such measures and they have also outlined the reasons why a company or product is vulnerable in the absence of such measures: ‘†¦the increase in research and development (RD) costs, the shortening of the life-cycle of products, difficulties of appropriating RD results, particularly in the field of easy-to-copy new technologies (such as computer programs), and the shift toward a global, knowledge-based economy, prompted a far-reaching reform of the intellectual property system (Correa 1994; David 1993)†¦..[5]’. In conclusion therefore, this document has looked at the position of QW in light of their business plan proposals. The piece has been demographically and geographically evaluated with reference to QW’s intentions to locate in Cambridge. Accordingly, the piece has looked at the competitors QW would be likely to encounter in this location and has examined how related factors may impact upon the likely success of QW. An analysis of the generic threats a business may face was looked at as a prelude to the more detailed study of how QW may operate within Cambridge, UK. Emotional relationship Essay

In this essay I will be looking at two theories of attachment, â€Å"an intense emotional relationship†¦ enduring over time and in which prolonged separation†¦ is accompanied by stress and sorrow† (Kagan et al 1982). I will also attempt to evaluate the statement from Bowlby ’58, where he says that â€Å"Mother love in infancy is as important for mental health as are vitamins and protein for physical health†. The two attachment theories I will be looking at are Bowlby’s 1953 Monotrophy Theory and Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory. Bowlby initially argued that attachment is an adaptive behaviour due to the human instinct to survive. Infants are born with a predisposition to survive and therefore have to form an attachment in order to gain food, warmth and protection etc. In order for this interaction to take place, the infant is born with Innate Social Releasers that prompt care-giving from the parent through releasers such as crying and cooing etc. Infants also need to form attachments in order to have a â€Å"secure base† from which to explore the world around them. This can be seen in securely attached infants, who are happy to explore an unfamiliar room, as long as the person with whom they have their â€Å"primary bond† is present (Strange Situation- Ainsworth and Bell 1970). Bowlby described this primary bond as â€Å"Monotrophy†, meaning turning towards one person. He recognised that this bond doesn’t always form with the biological mother, just the primary care giver. Adults also have a predisposition to care and be responsive to their offspring, as the survival of the infant into adulthood ensures the continuation of their genetic line. Therefore the have an innate response to the infants’ social releasers. Bowlby suggested that infants have a Critical Period, up to 2 1/2 years, for attachments to form. If attachments were not made by this age, it would not be possible for the child to form any attachment and the child would suffer long-term, permanent emotional damage, particularly in the formation of lasting adult relationships. This is due to the â€Å"Internal Working Model† according to Bowlby and later by Bretherton and Waters (1985) who said that â€Å"secure children have developed a positive working model of themselves, based on their feelings of security derived from having a sensitive, emotionally responsive and supportive primary care-giver†. It is therefore said that avoidant children have a rejecting, unresponsive caregiver, resulting in a negative working model of themselves. He also developed the Maternal Deprivation Hypothesis, where he claimed that infants who were unable to develop attachments would grow up having problems with relationships and have a higher chance of behavioural disorders. This hypothesis was supported by other psychologists such as Spitz and Wolf (1946) and Robertson and Robertson (1971). An alternative theory of attachment is the Psychosexual theory put forward by Freud. He said there are five stages of development a child goes through: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital. The stage that deals with attachment is the oral stage, which occurs from birth to about 18 months. Freud thought that during this time the infant is driven by the â€Å"Pleasure Principle†. This is caused by the development of the â€Å"Id†, the first component of the personality to develop. The â€Å"Id† demands instant gratification and in the oral stage, gratification comes through the mouth. The drive for oral satisfaction is vital at this age as the attention is focused on food and thus, survival. There are three parts to this stage of development: the drive for oral gratification that results in an uncomfortable feeling, so the infant cries. He is then fed, and the drive is reduced and the uncomfortable feeling, hunger, is gone. This is experienced as pleasure. Therefore the attachment is made with the person who offers the gratification and pleasure. Although at first glance, the two theories are very different, when analysed, similarities can be drawn. They both suggest stages the infant must go through in order to develop into a stable adult. Bowlby says that no infantile attachment leads to problems in adult relationships and Freud says that an unsuccessful transition through any of the five stages will result in regression in later life, for example a child with an oral fixation will suck his thumb, chew pen tops and in later life smoke. Both of these points are true to a certain degree, as there as been countless studies about children who have had maternal deprivation in early infancy and grown up into maladjusted adults. However it is difficult to be able to pinpoint exactly what is the cause of an adults’ maladjusted behaviour as there may be numerous reasons, which cannot be reduced to maternal deprivation alone. One major difference between these theories is that while Bowlby recognises that the primary bond doesn’t have to be with the mother, Freuds’ theory is dependant on the mother or wet nurse. This could lead to implications when trying to apply Freud’s theory today, as many infants are not breast-fed at all. Bowlby’s theory was very well received in the UK when it was published, as it came just after the second world war, when women were being encouraged to go back to the home and their children, so the men could return to the jobs in the factories etc. His theory gave the government something by which to almost force the women home, as the threat of a maladjusted child, due to your absence, was more than most women wanted to deal with. It was also one of the most important and influential pieces of psychological work of that century.

Is greater life expectancy always desirable? Essay

The quest for the elixir of life has been going on throughout history. In every civilisation, there are myths which depict heroes and heroines who live long lives, some even forever. There is also recorded history of men and women, called alchemists, who experimented to discover means by which people could live forever; or at least for very long times. Mod ¬em medicine too aims to prolong lives – often even of very sick per ¬sons with no hope of recovery from their ailments. In fact, one of the signs of a progressive nation is when its statistics show that its popula ¬tions has a high life expectancy; that is that they can live longer than their forefathers. The longer the life expectancy of a nation; the better that nation. All these show that it is in the human consciousness to want to live for a long period of time. The question now is whether this is always desirable. Seen in the light of the individual, longer life expectancy certainly seems desirable. Almost everyone would like to live and enjoy life longer. Hu ¬mans have generally shown a reluctance to die and leave this beautiful world and their loved ones. This is in the survival spirit with which every person seems to be born. Almost all of us want to prolong our lives and live as long as we can. However, there is a condition to this. We also want to live well. If we are in dire economic consequences or incurably ill or in great suffering, we would not want to live too long, as doing so will prolong the difficulty and pain. If with greater life expectancy comes greater health, it would be a good thing. Suppose a person can be made healthy till the day he dies, then he will not be dependent on anyone and greater life expectancy would be most welcome. Usually, we say that life expectancy has increased, in a society, with reference to statistics. These are likely to be simple and just show that over a number of years, people are now living longer. There is usually no reflection about the quality of life that has been lived by the people who now live longer. The statistics show an average without saying which of the people who have lived longer have lived disease-free lives and which have lived lives of comfort and happiness. It is possible that some of the people who have lived longer lives have actually lived miserably in retirement homes where the doctors have tried their best to make sure that the retirees  live as long as possible. If by longer life expectation we mean that people live longer, but with no improvement in the quality of their lives, then it would be much better if we do not have a longer life expectancy. In such cases, longer life expectancy would be undesirable. It would be better to live shorter but happier l ives than have one’s life prolonged, to suffer and die slow, lingering and painful deaths. Another consideration about greater life expectancy is about the effect it would have on society. Unless longer life expectancy also brings about with it greater health, there is going to be chaos. If people live longer, it could mean that it would take them longer to live out their old age. This means dependence on the younger population. The younger and health ¬ier generation, or indirectly the state, has to support the older. In fact, there have been forecasts that as time goes on there will be more old people in proportion to the younger. If this is a consequence of greater life expectancy, it will place a strain on the younger people as they would have to look after their parents and grandparents while they themselves struggle to make a living. The final thing to consider is whether there will be overpopulation if there is greater life expectancy. It is easy to see that the earth’s resourc ¬es are not limitless. There may come a time when there are too many people in the world to be able to survive. On the other hand we cannot rule out the possibility of earth colonies on the moon and perhaps even other planets. This seems to be a possibility in a century. In conclusion, though it is apparent that greater life expectancy is a good thing, there are certain conditions that should go with it. The most important thing is the ability of the people to live longer lives indepen ¬dently. There is also the consideration of the earth being able to support the larger number of people living on it. They wanted to be treated as equal participants in the community, not as slaves for the royals or nobles. The peasants who represents more than 90% of France’s population, were working for their own families and everyone else as they paid much more in taxes. Brotherhood was the way of everyone coming together†¦show more content†¦Brotherhood was not only sticking by each other in your community but brotherhood within the church system. Christian brotherhood was part of the fraternity, one was identified by the social and religious links based on their Christian brotherhood. The second sense of the fraternity was if one were to follow the path of liberty and equality as a free pact. Brotherhood was a way of life for people during the revolution it was how they were able to find a moment of peace in all the bad around them. To act toward someone with the spirit of bro therhood is to accept them as they are, and treat them as you would want to be treated. Even if the government was not doing this, the peasants and the lower class people knew that to survive they needed each other. One person alone would die, but with people to help them along their struggle they will survive. Hubris was a big conflict in the French Revolution, between humility and the intoxication of power napoleon was his hands full of dangerous hubris.
